After tackling the different themes addressed by the Consorzio Vini di Romagna in the summer of 2020 – which led to reflect on the value, identity, role and history of Romagna PDO wines and territories – a project that allows the Consorzio to share the richness of its land has now come to life.
This is how “Romagna, mosaic of life” (Editrice Lariana/Civiltà del Bere) was born. The book was written by different authors, and it summarizes the values that characterize and unite the region of Romagna, capturing the specific elements that differentiate the territories and the wines. An intentionally informative publication about Romagna and its wines, featuring a special section on the Sangiovese of the Sub-zones, the book aims to be able to support the work of the wineries in the coming years as the foundation of a shared story about the territory, the lack of which has been unfavorable to the regional narrative.
The book has been recently presented (last Monday 30 January in Faenza, ed.) before the authors, including writer and TV host Carlo Lucarelli, who wrote the preface, and renowned food and wine journalist Daniele Cernilli, who worked on the technical and informative section dedicated to the wines and the Sub-zones.
A special mention goes to Marisa Fontana, who provided the study on the typical Romagna varieties and contributed to putting together the content by Andrea Padovani, Beppe Sangiorgi, Gian Gaspare Zuffa, Stefano Marabini, Carla Scotti, Giovanni Nigro, Ilaria Filippetti, Alessandro Torcoli and Elena Erlicher.
We should also mention a warm tribute to Romagna by Gianni Morandi, a passionate lover of our Sangiovese, and an interview with chef Max Mascia about the two Michelin-starred restaurant San Domenico in Imola, an icon of excellence that offers outstanding regional wine on a daily basis.
«This book may seem a bit unusual when compared to other books published by the Consorzio, which are usually directed to a specialized audience – says Ruenza Santandrea, President of the Consorzio Vini di Romagna – We wanted to address all the people who love wine and are interested in discovering the story behind the wines, their territory of origin, the lands. But we also wanted to tell you about the people, who are a vital part of what you find in the glass, by tracing the history of our region, the traditions, the close bond with food, the communities, the culture, the villages, the Rocche: we wanted to show an image of Romagna that goes beyond our congeniality, ballroom dancing, the riviera, the piadina and Sangiovese. We wanted to offer the glimpse to an unexpected side of Romagna».
The book (226 pages filled with unpublished photos from the archive of the Consorzio and taken by Lido Vannucchi and Maurizio Magnani) is a precise and pleasant summary of Romagna’s history, identity and tradition, suitable even for the unspecialized public. The volume also showcases the region’s winegrowing culture that has been consolidated over time and is now revived to better communicate to the world. The central section is dedicated to the Sub-zones, with a focus on the soil and the preceding types of wines, identifying the characteristics of the Sub-zone wines according to the soils and their origin.
«Romagna is a land without borders» wrote journalist Guido Nozzoli «one that cannot be identified by the forests, mountains, rivers and climates, but by the people and their habits. Thus, it is not a geographical region, but a region distinguished by character, an island of emotions. A planet created by its inhabitants».
